JV FOOTBALL COUGARS DOMINATE

The Charlotte Catholic Junior Varsity Football finished the 2009 season with a record of 6 wins and 2 losses.  For the season, the Cougars outscored their opponents 176 - 113 and won by an average of 8 points per game.

Quarterbacks Russell Bottrell, Alex Jenkins, and Jack Brodowicz led the offense this season and combined for a total of 23 offensive touchdowns.  Alex Sabates and Nick Beato caught touchdown passes this year.  Tight ends Alex Holt and Quinn Augustine were favorite pass receiving targets.  Alex Holt made the catch of the year with a “triple tip” in the second half of the West Meck game (Alex almost repeated the acrobatics a few games later).

Behind a stout offensive line of Murphy Swancy, Ryan Barkley, Sam Will, Joe Wolljung, Brandon Ruder, Joe Moore and Brady Smith the Cougars ran for 21 touchdowns.  For the season, Nick Beato led all running back with twelve touchdowns and over 600 rushing yards.  Touchdown runs were also made by Alex Sabates (3), Eddie Hanlon (2), Cody Cook (1), Zach Gabriel (1), and Jack Brodowicz (1).

Significant plays were also made on special teams.  During the East Gaston game, Tyler Cubit returned the second half kick-off for a touchdown.  Paul Griggs had another stellar season with his kick-offs, punts, extra points, and field goals.  Griggs made seven field goal attempts this season.  Michael Moll, Chase Arnold, and Kendall Bellard combined to block a punt in the Charlotte Latin game, Matt Cincotta blocked and recovered a punt in the Harding game, and Ryan Manion changed the outcome of the East Gaston game with a blocked punt with one minute left in the fourth quarter (Nick Beato scored two plays later to give CCHS the win).

On defense, the Cougars had shut-out games against South Meck and Charlotte Country Day and the first string defense shut out Providence, West Meck, and Harding.  Chase Arnold, Kendall Bellard, Nick Georges and Brady Smith all recovered fumbles and Brady Smith had a safety against Charlotte Country Day.  Brendan Carroll, Andres Alvarado and Jack Brodowicz lead the team with two interceptions each and Anthony DellaMea, Michael Crowley, Matt Cincotta and Nick Georges also had interceptions.  Michael Moll led the team with six sacks and Marcus Wise (3), Brady Smith (3), Jackson Krone (2), Kendall Bellard, Scott Hoskins, Matt Cincotta and Lonnell Sherman all added to the team sack totals.

Of course, none of this would be possible without the incredibly dedicated coaching staff, the hard-working team of players, the high-spirited cheerleaders, and the steadfast support of so many parents, fans and volunteers.

GO COUGARS!!!

SEASON NOTES:  CCHSAA sincerely thanks Mr. Steve Smith for taking the time to write the weekly JV Football game recaps.  They are a pleasure to read and will make a wonderful keepsake for the season.  Thanks Mr. Smith!

Charlotte Catholic Rolls over Harding

The Charlotte Catholic Cougars upended the Harding Rams by a final score of 30-16.  Early turnovers gave the Cougars momentum to forge a big lead and hold on for their sixth win of the season.

The eight grade bands and cheerleaders from St. Mark and Holy Trinity performed during the game and at halftime.  Thanks for everyone’s participation; we all enjoyed the music and atmosphere.

On the Rams first possession, the defense held and forced a punt from the 22 yard line.  Matthew Cincotta blocked the punt and recovered the loose ball on the Harding 10 yard line.  Paul Griggs kicked a 32 yard field goal to put the Cougars up 3 – 0.  On Harding’s next drive, Nick Georges made a diving interception for another CCHS turnover.  The Cougars moved down the field behind solid blocking and Nick Beato scored on a two yard dive.  Beato would have two touchdowns on the night.  On their next possession, Alex Jenkins would connect with Alex Holt for a gain of 21 yards.  Alex Sabates, playing on a sprained ankle, would punch in the touchdown on the next play from 11 yards away.  Sabates also had a one yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

In the second quarter, Kendall Bellard picked up a short punt on the first hop and juked down the left side of the field for a 30 yard pick-up.  Bellard would also have a key fourth down stop in the first half.

At halftime, the Holy Trinity eighth grade football team was introduced.  The team is undefeated and is playing for the conference championship this weekend.  (webmaster note:  The Holy Trinity Eighth grade football team won the Championship game!!  Congratulations to our future Cougars!)

At the start of the second half, the Cougars had a 23 – 0 lead.  Mitch Lochbihler kicked off for the Cougars.  The Catholic defense would hold Harding scoreless until late in the fourth quarter.  Defensive contributions were made by Marc Lee, Jay Devore, T.J. Francomano, Jacob Brannon, Josh Conde, Carson Smith, Nick Ferraro, Scott Hoskins, Michael Whelan, Anthony DellaMea, and John Regan.

Offensively, the Cougars got big plays from Mac Shepard, Joe Moore, Will Quigley, Matt Mayernik, Andy Eicher, Chris Guin, John Armstrong, Mark Pollack, Drew Connery, Jonathan Tully, Matthew Lahey, Joey Grouse, Trent King, and Kevin Kirchmer.

Recap:  Inaugural Red and White Inter-Squad Game

Charlotte Catholic’s inaugural red and white junior varsity inter-team football scrimmage was a huge success.  With the encouragement of the parents, the preparation and intensity of the coaching staff, the support of the cheerleaders, and the resolve of our JV football team, this evening hopes to be the start of an annual intra-squad tradition at CCHS.

The white team ground out a strong rushing attack behind the running of Ryan Manion, Nick Beato, Zach Gabriel, Nick Sawyer, Trent King, and Joey Grouse.  In the first quarter, Sawyer had a 40 yard gain behind the blocking of JoJo Humann and John Knox and in the fourth quarter Beato had a 60 yard TD scamper down the left sideline.  Contributing to the offensive output were quarterbacks Russell Bottrill (bootleg TD run) and Alex Jenkins (23 yard roll-out for a first down).  During the second half, Jonathon Tulley, Kyle Tomlin and Trent King contributed in the backfield for the white team.

Behind the rushing of Eddie Hanlon, J.R. Regan, Alex Sabates, Daniel Weiss (two touchdowns), Cody Cook, and Michael Bragg, the red team controlled the clock throughout the game.  On the first possession of the game, Jack Brodowicz rolled out left and hit Alex Holt for a 45 yard touchdown; the red would not relinquish the lead for the remainder of the game.  Mark Pollack and Michael Bragg also played quarterback during the second half.

Special teams had a handful of notable plays.  On the white team, Marcus Wise did an outstanding job punting, Beato had a 40 yard kick-off return, and Jackson Krone blocked a PAT.  The white team connected on a fake PAT that Brandon Carroll threw to Beato for a two point conversion.  For the red team, Paul Griggs hit a 44 yard field goal with the clock running down to zero to end the first half.  In the fourth quarter, the red team converted on two special teams stand-out plays.  Regan had a galloping 65 yard kick-off return and Weiss scored a touchdown on a fake 44 yard field goal (pass by Brodowicz).

On both teams, linebackers made stand-out plays throughout the evening.  For the white team, linebackers Krone (three fumbles caused, two fumble recoveries), Carson Smith, Ryan Manion, Marc Lee, and Garrett Fowler (sack and celebratory dance) had strong contributions.  Drew Kocak, Lonnell Sherman, Marc Lee, Will Fink, Tyler Jensen, Jay Devore, T.J. Francomano, and Vincent Vu all added impressive defensive stops.

For the red team, linebackers Matt Cincotta, Chase Hayes, Ryan Auger and Matt Fitzpatrick made big plays.  Matt Mayernik, Brad Nelson (interception), Andres Alvarado, Michael Crowley, and Josh Conde all stepped up for the red team defense.

Recap Game 7

Cougars Triumph over East Gaston

The first ever meeting of the Charlotte Catholic Cougars and East Gaston Warriors JV Football teams resulted in a nail biting, last minute win for the Cougars.  The final score was CCHS 29 – East Gaston 26 and the outcome wasn’t determined until each team’s last possession.

There were many, many special plays made by both teams.  The Warriors and their veer offense had a strong evening and they broke off three long TD runs.  The Cougars ground out two touchdown drives of 58 and 62 yards.  The difference in the game was Tyler Cubit’s 75 yard kick-off return for a touchdown and Ryan Manion’s game changing blocked punt.

Paul Griggs drilled the opening kick-off into the end zone for a touchback (Griggs would have three kick-offs land in the end zone this evening).  Marcus Wise sacked the Warriors quarterback to stall their first drive.  Throughout the evening, the Cougars linebackers and secondary were called upon to make numerous tackles.  Nick Georges, Andres Alvarado and Jackson Krone all contributed with big defensive stops.

The Cougars first offensive possession was well balanced with Nick Beato, Alex Sabates, and Jack Brodowicz running well.  Brodowicz scored the first touchdown of the night with a 2 yard quarterback keeper behind the blocking of Brandon Ruder and Sam Will.  The PAT by Griggs was good and the score was CCHS 7 – East Gaston 0.

On CCHS’s next possession, Alex Holt caught a 44 yard pass down the left side for a huge gain to the 20 yard line.  Beato scored on a 4 yard pitch and run behind Brady Smith and Joe Wolljung.  East Gaston scored twice in the first half and the halftime score was CCHS 14 – East Gaston 14.

After Cubit’s touchdown scamper on the opening kick-off of the second half, East Gaston picked up touchdowns on their next two possessions to take the lead.  Midway through the fourth quarter, Murphy Swancy picked up the squib kick-off and rumbled to the 43 yard line.  Behind the rushing of Beato and Eddie Hanlon, the Cougars marched down as far as the 5 yard line but turned over the ball on downs.

East Gaston had the ball with 1:25 left in the game and a five point lead.  The Cougars defense stuffed the Warriors running attack on three straight plays and forced them to punt on fourth down.  Manion’s heroic blocked punt gave the Cougars one last chance with the ball at the 4 yard line.  Beato scored behind the blocking of Ruder and Swancy and Sabates made the two point conversion to give Catholic a three point lead.

With less than a minute left in the game, East Gaston moved the ball down the field but time ran out.  The final score was CCHS 29 – East Gaston 26.

Recap Game 6

Cougars Upend West Meck Hawks

The CCHS JV Football team won their fourth game of the season with a 34-12 thumping of the Hawks from West Meck.  The Cougars ground out touchdowns on five of its six offensive possessions.  Catholic’s defense gave up only one first down during the first half.

Special teams had a great night.  Most of the kick-offs landed into the end zone and the punt return team gave the offense great field position throughout the evening.  Nick Sawyer, Matt Lahey, and Chase Hayes had great kick-off coverage pinning the Hawks deep in their own territory.

West Meck’s offense was frustrated by a swarming Cougar defense.  Matthew Cincotta forced a fumble on West Meck’s first possession that was recovered by Brady Smith.  Throughout the first half, Joe Wolljung, Kendall Bellard and Michael Moll were in the backfield making tackles behind the line of scrimmage.

The first score of the night was the result of great special teams play.  Paul Griggs hit a 43 yard punt that was fumbled by West Meck and recovered by Quinn Augustine on the 5 yard line.  Nick Beato, behind the blocking of Sam Will and Brandon Ruder, scored up the middle.  Beato also had a 25 yard touchdown run and a 20 yard TD reception (throw by Alex Jenkins) in the first half.  Eddie Hanlon and Jack Brodowicz, on a quarterback keeper, added to the team’s rushing yardage.  Late in the second quarter, Cincotta and Bellard sacked the Hawk’s quarterback and Cincotta intercepted a pass in the end zone to close out the first half.  The score at halftime was CCHS 20 – West Meck 0.

The Cougar’s offense kept rolling in the second half.  In the third quarter, Alex Sabates had a strong 18 yard run and Alex Holt had an outstanding “triple tip” catch and run down the left side to the 1 yard line. On the next play, Hanlon took the Cougars into the end zone.  On Catholic’s next possession, Cody Cook, Zach Gabriel, and Sawyer ground out the Cougar running attack behind John Armstrong, Chris Guin and Will Quigley.  From the 3 yard line, Gabriel swept right and scored behind the blocking of Ryan Barkley, Mac Shepard, and Cook to extend the lead to CCHS 34 – West Meck 6.

On defense, Andreas Alvarado and Ryan Manion had big plays in the second half.  Jacob Brannon was in the West Meck backfield on three consecutive plays.  Will Johnson and Jack Corsi added some tough D-line stops.   The final score of the game was CCHS 34 – West Meck 12.

Recap - Game 5

Cougars Defeated by Olympic

Charlotte Catholic visited Olympic and left with an 18 – 7 loss.  Except for two big scoring plays by Olympic, the Cougars played even with the Trojans.  Either team could have won; the outcome depended on who got the better breaks.

CCHS received the opening kick-off and marched down field behind the running of Nick Beato and Eddie Hanlon.  After two first downs, Paul Griggs punted and Olympic started the night on their 12 yard line.  Lightning struck on the very next play – Olympic swept right and took the ball the length of the field for an 88 yard touchdown run.  Michael Moll blocked the PAT and the score was CCHS 0 – Olympic 6.

The Cougar defense bounced back in the first half with a sack from Scott Hoskins and a forced fumble by Matt Cincotta and a recovery by Marcus Wise.  Early in the second  quarter, Olympic had an eight play series resulting in a touchdown.  The 2 point conversion was stuffed by Chase Arnold, Jackson Krone, and Moll and the score was CCHS 0 – Olympic 12.

Catholic marched 34 yards late in the second quarter and looked primed to get on the scoreboard.  Daniel Weiss, Beato and Hanlon had nice runs to move the ball down the field.  Unfortunately, the drive stalled on the 2 yard line and Olympic ran out the clock.  The score at the half was CCHS 0 – Olympic 12.

The Catholic defense held Olympic without a first down on their opening possession of the second half.  Brendan Carroll returned the punt to the 48 yard line.  Beato had a strong 29 yard gain behind the blocking of Quinn Augustine and Murphy Swancy.  Four plays later Beato scored from three yards out.  Griggs made the PAT and midway through the third quarter the score was CCHS 7 – Olympic 12.

On Olympic’s next possession, Tyler Cubit and Carroll double covered the Trojan’s wide receiver and Carroll made the interception on the 45 yard line.  The Cougar drive stalled and both teams traded possessions until late in the fourth quarter.

With time running out, Olympic drove 80 yards to the Catholic 15 yard line but Kendall Bellard’s stout tackle on fourth and two gave the Cougars one last possession.  With 1:13 left in the fourth quarter, Catholic needed to score a touchdown.  Unfortunately, Olympic sacked the quarterback and recovered the fumble in the end zone.  The final score was CCHS 7 – Olympic 18.

Recap - Game 4

Cougars Fall to Charlotte Latin Hawks

The visiting Charlotte Latin Hawks beat the Charlotte Catholic Cougars by the score of 21-10.  Although the Cougars made a desperate comeback attempt in the fourth quarter, a well prepared and mature Latin team capitalized on six Cougar turnovers.

The first quarter was a back-and-forth struggle.  Brady Smith and Marcus Wise combined on a sack to force the Hawks to punt on their first possession.  In the second quarter, the Hawks had scoring drives of 49 yards and 2 yards and built up a commanding 14 - 0 lead.  On the final drive of the half, the Cougars drove from their 32 yard line to score on a short field goal by Paul Griggs to make the score CCHS 3 – Latin 14.  Alex Sabates, Nick Beato and Eddie Hanlon had back-to-back-to-back rushes of 16, 12 and 10 yards respectively during this drive.

Zach Gabriel started the second half with a determined 28 yard kick-off return for the Cougars.  The drive stalled and Latin took possession on the 20 yard line.  The Hawks went 80 yards on their next possession to take a 21 – 3 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Charlotte Catholic attempted a heroic comeback in the fourth quarter.  The Cougars drove from their 44 yard line to the Latin 24 yard line before turning the ball over on downs.  The CCHS defense pushed Latin backwards 20 yards and forced a poor a punt (pressure up the middle by Kendall Bellard, Chase Arnold and Michael Moll) to give the Cougars the ball on the 27 yard line with four and a half minutes to go.  Alex Jenkins hit Quinn Augustine for a 17 yard gain and Beato had a 2 yard touchdown run.  The PAT by Griggs was good and the score was CCHS 10 – Latin 21.  On Latin’s next possession, the Cougar defense created a turnover – Matthew Cincotta forced a Hawk fumble that was recovered by Nick Georges.  Beato had a huge 42 yard gain around the left end but the Cougar’s final drive of the night ended with an interception in the end zone.

Recap Game 3

Cougars Win Home Opener against Country Day

The CCHS JV Football team won their home opener and improved to 3-0 for the season with a 22-0 shutout of the Charlotte Country Day Buccaneers.  Behind the impressive blocking of the offensive line, the Cougars ground out touchdown drives of 20 yards, 66 yards, and 55 yards.   With strong rushing performances by Nick Beato (130 yards) and Alex Sabates (75 yards), the offense gained 250 yards on the ground.  The Cougars have exceeded 200 yards rushing per game for the first three games of the season.

For the second game in a row, the defensive front five dominated the line of scrimmage, the linebackers made big tackles for losses, and the pass coverage was superb.  The defense didn’t give up a first down until the Buccaneers final drive of the night.  Charlotte Catholic’s defense posted its second shut out of the season.

Kendall Bellard started off the night with a fumble recovery on the Buccaneer’s first possession.  The Cougars had great field position and Beato finished off the drive with a three yard touchdown behind the blocking of Quinn Augustine, Joe Moore and Murphy Swancy.  Both teams traded possessions for the rest of the first half and the halftime score was CCHS 6 – CCDS 0.

Charlotte Catholic received the second half kickoff and moved the ball down the field behind the rushing by Eddie Hanlon, Sabates, and Beato.  On fourth down and six, Beato scored on a 25 yard quick opener up the middle behind the blocking of Sam Will.  The extra point was good by Paul Griggs and the score was CCHS 13 – CCDS 0.

Brendan Carroll had a number of strong punt returns for the Cougars.   In the third quarter, Griggs nailed a punt deep inside the Buccaneers territory that was spotted at the three yard line.  On the Bucs next offensive play, Brady Smith stuffed the off-tackle play and dropped the running back for a safety.

On the last offensive drive for the Cougars, Hanlon had back-to-back runs of 5 yards that included the final score of the night to give the Cougars a 22-0 lead over the Buccaneers.  Michael Crowley’s interception sealed the win for CCHS.

Recap - Game 2

Cougars Roll over Providence (8/27/09)

The Cougars continued their winning ways by scoring early and often against Providence High School.  Behind Russell Bottrill and Alex Jenkins, the Cougars scored 30 unanswered points by halftime.  The defense did another stellar job holding the Panthers to only one first down and forcing three turnovers in the first half.

On their first possession, the Cougars marched down the field 42 yards for their first score of the night.  Nick Beato and Alex Sabates had key first down runs and Sabates ran 8 yards behind the blocking of Brandon Ruder and Ryan Barkley for the touchdown.  The PAT by Paul Griggs was good and Charlotte Catholic lead 7 – 0.

The right side of the Cougar’s defense forced a fumble on the Panther’s next series of downs giving the offense great field position on the 21 yard line.  On third down, Bottrill connected with Sabates in the left flat for a 15 yard touchdown.  The PAT by Griggs was good and the Cougars had a 14 – 0 lead.

Jack Brodowicz picked off a Panther pass on Providence’s next possession and returned the ball to the 20 yard line.  The Cougars took advantage of great field position and scored on an 11 yard Beato sweep behind Murphy Swancy and Daniel Weiss.  The PAT by Griggs was good and the Cougars extended their lead to 21 – 0.

Providence fumbled on their next possession and Chase Arnold’s recovery gave the Cougar offense field position on the 30 yard line.  Jenkins hit Quinn Augustine streaking down the left side for a 29 yard gain.  Cody Cook dove in behind Sam Will for the score.  The Cougars took a commanding 27 – 0 lead.

Providence was forced to punt after Michael Moll, team leader in sacks, dropped the quarterback behind the line of scrimmage for his third sack of the season.  Marcus Wise and Matt Cincotta tackled the punter behind the line of scrimmage resulting in a short field once again for the Cougar offense.  Griggs hit a 42 yard field goal to end the first half with the Cougars up 30 – 0.

In the second half, Anthony DellaMea picked off a Panther pass for another Cougar turnover.  Eddie Hanlon gained 25 yards behind the blocking of John Armstrong and Andy Eicher.   Kevin Campbell and Jenkins led Cook around the left end for a big first down on third and long.  On the same drive, Kevin Kirchmer picked up a first down behind the blocking of J.D. Thompson.  A 46 yard field goal attempt was no good.

In the fourth quarter, Providence connected on two long touchdown passes and returned a fumble for a touchdown.  The final score was Charlotte Catholic 30 – Providence 20.

Recap - Game 1

Cougars Win Season Opener against South Meck (8/20/09)

Charlotte Catholic kicked off to the Sabres who managed only one first down on their initial possession.  Linebackers Matt Cincotta and Jackson Krone made big stops forcing South Meck to punt.  Behind the running of Nick Beato, David Herlocker, Daniel Weiss, and Eddie Hanlon, the Cougars drove 57 yards on their first possession for a touchdown.  Beato ran 6 yards behind Sam Will and Joe Moore for the score.  Paul Griggs made the PAT, Charlotte Catholic 7 – South Meck 0.

Each team traded possessions then South Meck made their way down the field behind their eight man offensive line.  Michael Moll and Marcus Wise made tackles in the backfield to slow down the Sabre’s drive.  On a crucial fourth down and goal, South Meck’s running back was stopped on the one yard line by Brady Smith and Brendan Carroll.  The Cougars offense took over on downs.  Herlocker peeled off a 21 yard gain behind Murphy Swancy followed by Beato who swept right behind Ryan Barkley, Brandon Ruder, and Jamie Choulas for a gain of 23 yards.  Catholic ran out the clock and took a 7 point lead into halftime.

South Meck’s first possession of the second half stalled after Moll sacked the quarterback for a 7 yard loss and Carroll picked off a fourth down pass attempt.  On South Meck’s next possession, Moll rung up another sack on a half-back reverse option.  The Sabres were forced to punt facing an impossible fourth down and 38 yards.

Catholic took over and marched down the field behind Herlocker’s 17 yard dive and Zach Gabriel’s 20 yard end around.  Beato finished off the drive with a 20 yard touchdown run behind the left side of the line.  Griggs made the PAT and Charlotte Catholic was up 14 – 0.

South Meck had one final drive that was slowed down by strong open field tackles from Kendall Bellard and T.J. Francomano.  An interception by Andres Alvarado was the final play that sealed the win for the JV Cougars.
